Pribor is one of the oldest cities in North Moravia.
The first written notice about the town is dated 1251. In 2001 the town celebrated 750th anniversary from the edition of document undersigned by the later king Premysl Otakar II. The town has been an important industrial and cultural center of its region. Already in the 14th century there was higher number of tradesmen than in any other town in its region, including Ostrava. At the end of 16th century tradesmen started to associate themselves in dreds of years the guild of linen-makers. In 1615 the town obtained famous charters of cardinal Dietrichstein, who also distinguishably improved town's Coat-of-arms.
The town has not escaped war fires nor natural disasters or plagues could bend the town to its knees.
One of the important chapters in the history of Pribor is education.
Already in 1541 we can find the first written notice about Pribor's school in the 16th century attended by St. Jan Sarkander. One of the most important evens was the establishment of Piaristic campus and gymnasium in 1694. Other, not less important event, was the opening of Czech Teacher's Institution in 1875. There were many other schools in Pribor, e.g. Townspeople school for boys and also fro girls, German gymnasium {1858 - 1885}, Czech higher state school {1902}, recent High school of Masaryk, for a short time a basket-making school, agricultural school, special school for woman professions, higher school of trade and agriculture, music schools {recently a basic school of arts} and of course basic schools.
Pribor had also been an industrial town. Approximately in 1848-1855 a sugar factory of Vavrinec Czernotzky was producing sugar. From 1862 a factory of Jan Raska jr. was producing linen. In 1864 a production of linen started in Fluss factory in the area of former sugar factory. In 1871 was Raska's factory overtaken by firm Russo a Finzi and in 1883 by i. Fluss, who started a production of hats here. In 1882 A. Reiser established a factory for the production of stockings in Klokocov {recent Lonka} and in 1885 S. Madler a factory for knitted goods {later Tatra}. From 1901 a factory of brothers Schnurer for luxurious knitted goods was in operation. From the second half of 19th century to 1924 a tile stoves were produced in a factory of Fr. Neusser in Klokocov. Today in Pribor there is a factory for high volume washing machines of Belgian firm IVC and American EDX Automotive, which made rubber packing for cars.
The most important native of Pribor is well known doctor psychoanalytic Sigmund Freud
{1856 - 1939}, who spent his first years of childhood here. Many important people were born here: a founder of Moravian history recording Tomas Rehor Wolny {1793-1871}, Moravian patriot and philosopher Bonifac Buzek {1788-1839}, professor of Prague's university Josef Ignac Bucek {1741-1821}. In 1876 a doctor and paleologist and composer Vaclav Pokorny and many others. At Pribor's schools were many important teachers, professors and students, e.g. archbishop A.C. Stojan, Ludvika Smrckova {glass artist}, Ladislav Hosak {historian}, Eugen Stoklas {poet} Zdenek Bar {writer}, Jan Vaclav Sladek {painter}, Jan Richter {painter}, Frantisek Juran {sculptor}
In December 1881 a first train went through Pribor. The town is situated on international motorway E 462 and has good bus connection with close surrounding and also with large Moravian and Bohemian cities.
In 1989 Pribor received a status of protected historical area. Former independent communities Kloko4ov a Veska {from 1948}, Hajov a Prchalov{from 1976} belong to a town area. Population of Pribor is 8 800 to 19th November 2001. The town is a member of Sdruzeni historickych sidel Cechia, Moravia and
Silesia.
