NOVÝ JIČÍN

Nový jičín is a proud of its unique masaryk square. Here you can admire many remarkable bourgeios houses of rich patricians neatly surrounded by the arcades which add even more to nový jičín appeal. There is a particulary remarkable. Twostory remaissance house with balconies which has become known as the old post office. The house was built in 1563 for ondřej řepa, the local noble. In 1787, the ancestoral post office was established in this house. Today there is a cultural center, where various cultural events and exhibitions také place. The centre of the square is garnished with a column dating from the early 18th century and a stone fountain decorated with a sculpture of dancing peasants dressed in the costume of kravaře. A majestic impression of the square is supported by the late baroque casque over the entrance to the church of saint mary assatination.

The remains of the fortification walls and a six-wall bastion erected in the 17th century, are worth walking along. These walls encircled the inner town with the square to protect it. A castle was also part of the fortification. The žerotín castle was built in the 16th century in gothic styla. The two preserved towers are fine examples of what the castle looked like long ago. Its interior hosts a district museum and a permanent hat exhibition which shoes the development of milinetary fashion throughout the centuries reflecting the history of the town. Visiting nový jičín is not worthwhile only because of the square and the castle. You may care to admire other historical features. The holy trinity chapel is situated in the park named in honour of leoš janáček, the composer. It was rebuilt in 1621 and the tower was reconstructed in 1657. A one-nave baroque chapel of saint mary, also called the spanish chapel, was built in 1724 - 1727. The beskydy theater was rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style (1886) including the column entrance and richly plastered ceiling of the entrance hall.
