Štramberk castle |
A ruin - the original castle was founded in the 13-14th century. It was adapted in Renaissance style in the 16th century but these adaptations are known only from old pictures of the castle. In the second half of the 18th century the castle partially collapsed and later on, deliberate destruction followed. Only at the end of the 19th century renovation and securing works were started. The cylindrical "berg frit" - the
well-known "Trúba" - has survived till today. |

The old market hall near the Lower Gate, on of the oldest building in Štramberk, is a nice architectural item featured already on a postcard from 1722. Butcher's shops were here in the 19 c. and the municipal museum used it for a short time after 1959, the year that city status was granted to the then 600 years old place. the Zdeněk Burian Foundation Museum was installed here upon provate initiative in 1992, featuruing the works of the famous painter of the lost primeval worlds who spent a part of his lifetime in Štramberk. The romantic Šipka
Cave, known for numerous fossil finds (cave bears, lions, mammoths, hairy rhinos), inspired Burian to picture the primeval world in his artistic paintings. THematic selections from Burian's work are on show in the tourist season, otherwise the museum serves as municipal gallery hosting e.q. the traditional Nativiry exhibitions. The building is shared with the local information centre. |
